Abstract
This collection consists of photographs documenting the interrelated Osgood, Holyoke, Ward, and Batchelder families of Salem and Beverly, Mass.
Biographical Sketches
John H. Batchelder (1817-1904) was born in Beverly, Mass., the son of Henry and Abigail (Mann) Batchelder. In 1839, he married Jane Reed Smith (1816-1899) in Summit, Wisconsin Territory, but soon returned to Massachusetts, becoming a prominent dentist in Salem and practicing there for more than 50 years. He also had a wide-ranging career in public service as a member of Salem's City Council and Board of Aldermen, as well as the Massachusetts House of Representatives. The Batchelders had six children, two of whom survived to adulthood--Elizabeth White Batchelder (1846-), who married Charles Stuart Osgood of Salem, and Nelly Alden Batchelder (1849-), who married antiquarian John Tyler Hassam.
Charles Osgood (1809-1890) was the son of Salem shipmaster Nathaniel Osgood and his wife Elizabeth (Cowan) Osgood. After embarking upon a banking career, Charles turned to art as a student of Chester Harding. He opened a studio in Salem in 1828, producing portraits from life and copies of portraits from other artists. He married Susan Ward, the granddaughter of Edward Augustus Holyoke, in 1838 and had four children: Charles Stuart Osgood (1839-1897), Susan Holyoke Osgood (1840-1841), Robert Osgood (1841-1925), and Susan Ward Osgood (1844-1916). Charles Stuart Osgood married Elizabeth White Batchelder and had a lengthy career in Salem as a lawyer and member of state and local government. They had six children: Elizabeth Stuart Osgood, Robert Ward Osgood, Charles Stuart Osgood, Henry Osgood, Philip Holyoke Osgood, and Edward Holyoke Osgood.

Collection Description
The Osgood-Ward-Holyoke-Batchelder photographs document the ancestors and descendants of Charles Stuart Osgood and his wife Elizabeth White (Batchelder) Osgood. Although primarily photographs of family members, the collection also includes numerous views of Salem, Mass., including family homes, and views of Boston and Beverly, Mass., among other places. A carte de visite album kept by "Grandma Bradford" includes portraits of Bradford and Nickerson family members, related to the Osgoods by marriage to their son Edward Holyoke Osgood (b. 1882). The collection also includes a number of black and white photographs of portraits painted by Charles Osgood. Cartes de visite and cabinet photographs make up the bulk of the collection, but there are also tintypes and a single cyanotype. Identified Massachusetts photographers include Josiah J. Hawes of Boston; James W. Black of Boston; William G. Hussey, Bousley & Moulton, and Cross Photo of Salem; and William M. Wires of Lynn, among many others.
