Guide to the Photograph Collection
Abstract
This collection consists of portraits and views collected by the Museum of the American China Trade.
Historical Sketch
The Museum of the American China Trade was founded in 1964 by H. A. Crosby Forbes to document the American China Trade. The museum was located in the Forbes family home in Milton, Massachusetts. In 1984, the museum closed, and the artifacts were given to the Peabody Essex Museum and manuscript and photograph collections to the Massachusetts Historical Society. The Forbes house is now operated as a museum documenting the Forbes family and their activities.
Collection Description
This photographic archive of the Museum of the American China Trade contains portraits documenting the descendants of Robert Bennett Forbes and Rose Greene Smith, particularly through their son James Murray Forbes, who married Alice F. Bowditch, and their acquaintances and associates. Related families include the Crosby, Perkins, and Russell families. Views include Forbes family homes in Milton and Boston, Massachusetts; Dark Harbor, Maine; and Naushon Island. There are also a number of views of China, where various members of the family did business. Members of the Forbes family were devoted horse men and women, as well as keen sailors, so the collection includes photographs of horses, polo matches, and horse racing, as well as of ships and ship models.
Arrangement Note
The photographs in this collection were originally classified by MACT as either CB (cabinet) or AR (archives). The photographs have been sorted into broad categories and arranged alphabetically. Unidentified photographs appear at the end of each series.
