Guide to the Collection
Abstract
This collection consists of photographs of students, faculty, and facilities of the Cotting School for Handicapped Children, established in Boston as the Industrial School for Crippled and Deformed Children.
Historical Sketch
The Cotting School was founded in 1893 in Boston as the Industrial School for Crippled and Deformed Children by Drs. Augustus Thorndike and Edward Hickling Bradford and was incorporated on 27 March 1894. It was the first private and free day school for children with disabilities in North America, providing education and special training to children and young adults with physical disabilities. The goal was to educate students so they were able to support themselves after finishing school. While attending school, students also received free meals, transportation, and medical supervision.
The first class met in October 1894 at St. Andrew's Hall at 38 Chambers Street. It consisted of seven students and was taught by Mary M. Perry, who later became the school's first superintendent. The school relied on donations, legacies, and gifts to continue its free services and to provide the resources and facilities needed to offer primary and junior high school education, as well as training in various trades, such as cane seating, basketry, cobbling, sewing and embroidery, and printing. The school also held fairs where products made by students were sold, the proceeds going to the school's operating costs, building its treasury, and providing supplies and materials to students to continue their training.
In 1895, the school moved to 6 Turner Street and expanded to 26 students. In 1897, the first group of five students graduated from eighth grade at a larger facility at 424 Newbury Street in 1897. Three years later, the school purchased land at 241 St. Botolph Street and began construction on a new and larger building, under the leadership of Francis Joy Cotting. The new building was completed for the start of the 1904-1905 school year, with 65 enrolled students. The new space allowed the school to further expand its vocational departments. In 1907, gymnastic training and recreation were added to the curriculum and an outdoor classroom added to the roof. The purchase of an adjacent lot on St. Botolph Street in 1922 allowed the school to add a four-year high school program.
The school also provided numerous enrichment and recreational programs to its students as early as 1896, with summer vacations and day trips to Lancaster, Massachusetts; Children's Island Sanitarium in Marblehead, Massachusetts; Camp Hemenway in Canton, Massachusetts; and an annual apple picking and picnic trip to Charles E. Cotting's farm in Berlin, Massachusetts. An annual Christmas party hosted by the Ladies Committee was the highlight of the school year. Celebrities including Rex Trailer, Ithzak Perlman, Carl Yastrzemski, and myriad other local sports figures were frequent visitors to the school, as well.
By the 1940s, the school had a well-established program focused on the "whole child": academic, industrial, vocational, physical, and social. In addition to a traditional K-12 curriculum and vocational courses, students received medical care overseen by the school's medical director, who would cooperate with hospitals, clinics, and family physicians on the students' behalf with support from nurses; and social activities to ensure students engaged in activities such as sports, theater, music, clubs, and social meetings to build confidence, communication skills, and group cooperation.
In 1948, the school changed its name to the Industrial School for Crippled Children and then the Cotting School for Handicapped Children in 1974. It was around this time that the school also expanded to include students with learning and communication disabilities before merging with the Krebs School Foundation of Lexington in 1986. After selling its property at 241 St. Botolph Street in 1987, the school (now known as Cotting School) moved to its current facility at 453 Concord Avenue in Lexington, Massachusetts.

Collection Description
This collection consists of photographs of students, faculty, and facilities of the Cotting School for Handicapped Children, established in Boston in 1894 as the Industrial School for Crippled and Deformed Children. Photographs depict the students at work and play and document the evolution of treatment options for children with disabilities. Although many photographs were unidentified, an effort has been made to identify individual students and faculty members through research in newspapers and school publications. The collection also includes photographs of faculty and board members, as well as photographs of the facilities, from its long-time headquarters on St. Botolph Street in Boston to its current campus in Lexington, Massachusetts.
