Collection Summary

Abstract

This collection consists of photographs of members of Massachusetts military units from the Civil War through World War I.

Biographical Sketch

Jacques Noel Jacobsen, Jr. (1932-2016) was a teacher, archaeologist, and historian. For more than 50 years, he was also a licensed auctioneer and appraiser and antique dealer specializing in police, fire, and military antiques and ephemera. He was an elected fellow of the Company of Military Historians and author of several monographs on American military uniforms and insignia.

Collection Description

This collection consists of photographs of Massachusetts soldiers from the Civil War through World War I collected by militaria dealer Jacques Noel Jacobsen, Jr. The collection mostly consists of studio photographs of individual soldiers, the bulk of which are unidentified, but assumed to be Massachusetts men, either by having been photographed by a Massachusetts photographer or through insignia or other clues in the photographs. The majority of identified photographs seem to have come from the same source and depict Massachusetts veterans of the Civil War. Also in this group are a few photographs of cadets from English High School in Boston in 1887. In addition to cabinet photographs, the collection includes cartes de visite and stereoviews.
