This woodcut by Alonzo Hartwell, based on Paul Revere's engraving, originally appeared in the American Magazine of Useful and Entertaining Knowledge, published in 1835 by the Boston Bewick Company. In 1836 that company failed and their inventory was taken over by different publishers. In June of 1838, J.S. Redfield of New York used the very same wood-block and published Hartwell's image in the Family Magazine, shown here, along with text taken from C.H. Snow's History of Boston. During the next ten years this wood-cut was used extensively by a variety of publishers in Boston as well as in other nearby towns.
