This portrait depicting British politician Thomas Pownall was completed by Henry Cheever Pratt (1803-1880) in 1861 and was based on a 1777 engraving by Richard Earloom from a portrait by Francis Cotes.

Thomas Pownall was born in Lincolnshire, England, in 1722. He completed his studies at Trinity College, Cambridge, in 1743. He served as lieutenant governer and later governor of New Jersey from 1755 to 1759 and as governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony from 1757 to 1759. The following year, Pownall returned to England where he served in Parliament and authored The Administration of the Colonies (1764). Thomas Pownall died in Bath, England, in 1805.
