This portrait of Ward Nicholas Boylston, a benefactor of Harvard College, was completed by Gilbert Stuart (1755-1828) in 1825.
Born Ward Hallowell in Boston in 1749 to Benjamin and Mary (Boylston) Hallowell, he changed his name to Ward Nicholas Boylston in 1770 at the request of his uncle, Nicholas Boylston. In 1773 he left on a tour of Europe and the Middle East. He joined his Loyalist uncle Thomas Bolyston, who had re-established his Boston merchant house in London at the outbreak of the Revolution. Boylston returned to Boston in 1800, settled in Princeton in the summers and spent winters at Roxbury. He was a benefactor of Harvard College and a founder of the Boylston Fund for medical dissertations there. Ward Nicholas Boylston died in Roxbury in 1828.
