This portrait of David Cobb, brother-in-law of Robert Treat Paine and founder of the Society of the Cincinnati, was completed by Chester Harding (1792-1866), after the original by Gilbert Stuart (1755-1828) in 1822 or 1823.
David Cobb was born in Attleborough, Massachusetts, in 1748. He graduated from Harvard College in 1766 and was the brother-in-law of Robert Treat Paine. Cobb practiced medicine in Taunton, Mass., served as a distinguished general in the Revolution, and was a founder of the Society of the Cincinnati. He was a representative in Congress from 1793 to 1795, chief justice of the Court of Common Pleas in Hancock, Maine, lieutenant governor of Massachusetts and president of the state senate. His papers form part of the collections of the Massachusetts Historical Society. David Cobb died in Boston in 1830.
