This portrait of Ann Thompson Gerry, wife of vice president of the United States Elbridge Gerry, is attributed to Dominico Canova (1800-1868).
Ann Thompson Gerry was born in New York City about 1766. Educated in Europe and considered by some to be the "most beautiful woman in the United States", she married Elbridge Gerry in 1786. The following year, Elbridge Gerry purchased Elmwood, a confiscated Tory estate in Cambridge. He died in 1814 while vice president of the United States. She was the last surviving widow of a signer of the Declaration of Independence. Ann Thompson Gerry died in New Haven, Connecticut, in 1849.
