This portrait of Jonathan Mason (1725-1798) was painted by his grandson Jonathan Mason (1795-1884) in 1822, after the orignal by John Johnston (c.1753-1818).
Jonathan Mason was born in Boston in 1725, the son of Benjamin and Elizabeth (Scollay) Mason. He married Miriam Clark in 1747 and had 4 children. A brazier by trade, Mason became a prosperous merchant and served as a Boston town selectman from 1769 to 1771. He was deacon of the Old South Church from 1770 until his death and was active as a Son of Liberty during the Revolution. He died in 1798.
