This portrait of John Temple (1732-1798) was painted by Gilbert Stuart (1755-1828) in 1806, after the original painted by John Trumbull in 1784.
John Temple was born on Noddle's Island in Boston in 1732, the son of Robert and Mehetable (Nelson) Temple. He married Elizabeth Bowdoin in 1767. Temple served as surveyor general of customs in the Northern District of America from 1761 to 1767; as commissioner of revenue from 1767 to 1774; as lieutenant governor of New Hampshire from 1761-1774; and as first British consul general to the United States from 1786 to 1798. He claimed a British baronetcy in 1786. He died in New York City in 1798.
