This pastel portrait of Elizabeth Temple (1750-1809) was made by James Sharples (1752-1811), circa 1800.
Elizabeth Bowdoin was born in Boston in 1750, the daughter of Gov. James Bowdoin and Elizabeth (Erving) Bowdoin. She married Sir John Temple in 1767 and had 5 children. From a wealthy and influential family, she brought a dowry of £1000 to her marriage and eventually inherited a third of her father's estate. She lived in New York after 1785 and died in Boston in 1809.
