This portrait of John Tudor (1709-1795) was painted by Joseph Steward (1753-1822) around 1750.

John Tudor was born near Exeter, Devonshire, England, in 1709, the son of William and Mary Tudor. He came to Boston with his mother in 1715 after the death of his father and married Jane Varney in 1732. A baker by trade and also a church deacon, he kept a remarkable diary of events in Boston from 1732 to 1793. Tudor died in Boston in 1795.

The Massachusetts Historical Society has in its collection personal and business records kept by John Tudor, including a photocopy and transcript of a journal kept from 1732-1793, listing Tudor family births, deaths, and marriages, descriptions of political events in Boston and details about the weather. The location of the original journal is unknown.
