Gov. John Winthrop's (1588-1649) journal (kept in three volumes) describes events in the history of the Massachusetts Bay Colony from March 1630 until shortly before Winthrop's death. This manuscript volume covers the years 1644-1649.
Notes about John Winthrop's journals (three volumes):
John Winthrop journal, History of New England (manuscript), volume 1, 1630-1636; from the Winthrop family papers, Massachusetts Historical Society. See online presentation.
John Winthrop journal, History of New England, volume 2, 1636-1644. Note: the manuscript volume was destroyed in a fire in 1825 that destroyed several buildings and many law offices and shops in Boston. James Savage, a lawyer, antiquarian-historian, and the Treasurer of the MHS at the time of the fire, borrowed the manuscript volume and had been working on a transcription of the volume in his law office.
