This proclamation issued by Massachusetts Bay Governor William Shirley on 12 June 1755 declares the following New England tribal groups to be enemies of England: Norridgewock [Narantsouuk], Arresaguntacock [used interchangeably to describe the Androscoggin and Pequawket/Pigwacket], Weweenock [Wewenoc], St. John's [Maliseet], and others. The proclamation calls for the capture and murder of these groups and lays out bounties according to age and gender. Bounties like these served as a license for colonists to kill indigenous people.
