The flag of Prospect Hill.
Words by Jno. K. Hall
Music by J. W.
Bailey
I. 'Twas when the flower of England's troops,
Intrench'd in Boston lay,
On Prospect Hill were anxious groups,
All eager for the fray;
Their hearts had long defiance hurl'd,
Though every voice was still,
Untill old Putnam here un furl'd,
The Flag of Prospect Hill.
[Chorus:] The Flag, the Flag, the Flag, the Flag of Prospect
Hill.
II. Sublime the motto which it bore,
"Appeal to heaven's high throne"
That he who brought them to this shore,
Would guard them as his own;
And here they stood, this gallant band,
Resolved their blood to spill,
Defending from a foe-man's hand,
The Flag of Prospect Hill.
[Chorus:] The Flag, the Flag, the Flag, the Flag of Prospect
Hill.
III. While fervent prayer to heaven ascends,
To bless the patriot's cause,
The air a solemn silence lends,
As suppliant here they pause;
Amen! Then with three hearty cheers,
Was echoed loud and shrill,
While floating high o'er all appears
The Flag of Prospect Hill
[Chorus:] The Flag, the Flag, the Flag, the Flag of Prospect
Hill.
IV. Now to this spot the patriot turns
Though years on years have fled,
For Freedom's torch undim'd still burns
Above the hallowed dead.
And though those manly hearts that beat
For Freedom, now are still
Yet here their sons with pride still greet
The Flag of Prospect Hill.
The flag etc.
V. And here now rally hearts as brave,
And prompt at duty's call;
Resolved that Flag shall proudly wave,
Or with it they will fall;
And here they raise their battle cry,
Of "Death to all who will
On sea or land, that flag defy";
The Flag of Prospect Hill.
The flag etc.
