On Monday the 5th, we laid by the
roadside all day, waiting for the 2nd &
3rd Divs. to pass us to get into the
advance. At 7 we started in rear of the
whole Corps. The road ran through a
swamp where the wagons fared ill,
and we reached camp at half past
two in the morning, having in 7 hours
marched 1 mile and a half!

The 7th brought rain with it. We had
passed Ogeechee Cross Roads the day
before, and were in one great swamp
midleg deep from 7 A.M till 10 at
night, getting to within a mile of
Springfield. The next morning, on reach–
ing that place, we left the pack
mules & regt’l wagon, in which were
our blankets & valises. Friday morning
we struck the Aug. & Savannah pike
20 miles from the city. All the morning
we heard brisk cannonading to the
right & left and about 3 our turn
came. As we were at dinner we heard
some shells explode which we knew
