Our brig. was worse off than others owing
to the inefficiency of the Commissary.
We spent our whole time in writing
orders & sending our servants with
them to Corps, Divis & Brig. C. S. but
generally in vain. One day Frank & I
had nothing for breakfast & were in a

Mr. Fox, hearing of our famished state
very kindly sent us a plate of “cold
wittles” which was eagerly accepted
and eaten. All we could get was rice
which they were threshing at some mills
up the river. Judge then of our delight
on hearing that Ft McAllister was
taken & the cracker line open, though we
did not experience the good effects
of it for several days after.
On the afternoon of the 15th the reg’t
moved over to Argylle Island, where
the 3rd Wis. were running a rice mill.
I was on picket at the time, and
after blazing away at the Johnnies
across the swamp for 24 hours, followed.
I had a bad time in crossing as the
fog was very heavy & no one knew
