the capture of the Florida, of Hood's fight
with Thomas, and the rumor concerning
Butler's & Stanton's appointments, which they
accepted as true. You should see their
diatribes against “the Beast”, a half column
at least of epithets worthy the oldest fish-
woman of Billingsgate. We read, too,
Jeff Davis' Message, which was very int-
eresting, and the comments of the Southern
press upon it. They set up a fearful
howl at the “muzzling of the press” and
the arming of the blacks, discussed in it,
but that you have probably seen.
The next day we That afternoon we
struck the Macon & Savannah R.R. at
Ten Mile Station, and commenced tear–
ing up track at that place. The next
day we went to Davisboro, the 2nd Div.
being on the track. The morning of the
28th saw us at work on the R.R.
We began at the 121st mile post from
Savannah, our Div. alone (about 5000 strong) working, &
destroyed 7½ miles; then leaving the road
we marched to Spier's Station. The next
day, was a repetition of this, only be–
coming more expert we destroyed 10 miles
