Pocketbook of needle-worked animals and flowers on green background. Vivid yellow silk plain-weave lining, wool twill tape, and wool embroidery threads. The weft of the silk plain-weave lining is darker than the warp, suggesting it may have been piece dyed rather than yarn dyed. Chinese used different dyestuffs for yellow than Colonial America, so the results would not likely match as well. Linen substrate for embroidery is very basic plain-weave, definitely not commercial. The goat symbolizes lust and fertility, lamb innocence and purity. Front labeled in white cross-stitch "FOR BENIAMIN 1753 / STVART" with a yellow bird embroidered below.
