[ This description is from the project: Fashioning the New England Family ]
This sleeved waistcoat of Boston merchant Andrew Oliver, Jr. was made in England of blue silk with silver gilt embroidered decoration. He wore this coat in 1755 when posing for his portrait by Joseph Blackburn, who took liberties with the embroidered design but faithfully captured the coral colored silk that once lined the coat—and still lines the pocket flaps. The coat has been extensively altered through its lifetime, most notably in the sleeves that are made from a similar color but slightly different patterned silk, with the original embroidered sleeve cuffs sewn on.
