Length of gold hand-crafted bobbin lace folded in original paper wrappers with the price written in iron gall ink. On the outer wrap Ann Susan Holmes Upham (1804-1877) wrote a note that reads "Gold lace given me with other old-fashioned things by my mother.” Lace such as this became trim for just about any type of clothing or accessory for men, women, and children. It was used for bonnets, caps, shoes, waistcoats, gowns, stomachers (a separate piece at the center front of a bodice), and even bodices or stays. Metallic lace was the finishing touch that could add a desired sparkle and shine to 18th century clothing.
