Gov. John Winthrop's (1588-1649) journal (kept in three volumes) describes events in the history of the Massachusetts Bay Colony from the sailing of the Arbella in March 1630 until shortly before Winthrop's death. This manuscript volume covers the years 1630-1636.

John Winthrop journal, History of New England, volume 2, 1636-1644. Note: the manuscript volume was destroyed in a fire in 1825 that destroyed several buildings and many law offices and shops in Boston. James Savage, a lawyer, antiquarian-historian, and the Treasurer of the MHS at the time of the fire, borrowed the manuscript volume and had been working on a transcription of the volume in his law office.

Cambridge, Mass.: the Belknap Press of Harvard University Press, 1996. (This edition uses the transcription of manuscript volume 2 from the 1853 published edition.)
