William Vaughan, who delivered Henry Laurens’ first direct communication with JA since his release from the Tower of London, was the younger brother of Benjamin Vaughan, a protégé of Lord Shelburne. Benjamin Vaughan acted as an intermediary between Laurens and Shelburne (Laurens, Papers , 15:474–476, 482).
