Obadiah B. Brown (1779–1852), minister of the First Baptist Church in Washington and sometime Chaplain to Congress (Sprague, Annals Amer. Pulpit , 6:538–539; JQA, Diary, 1 Jan. 1820).

CFA’s own set of William Shakespeare’s Dramatic Works, 12 vols., London, 1820, is in the Stone Library at the Adams National Historical Site in Quincy, as are six other copies of Shakespeare’s plays. Miscellaneous volumes of three editions of the dramatist’s Works are among JA’s books in the Boston Public Library ( Catalogue of JA’s Library , p. 226).

That is, a drawing lesson. Presumably CFA’s teacher was Pietro Cardelli (d. 1822), who had executed a bust of JQA in 1818 and did decorative carving on the Capitol. See JQA, Diary, 1818–1819, and his correspondence with Cardelli in Adams Papers; Groce and Wallace, Dict. Amer. Artists . There is some question, however, whether there was not a second artist named Cardelli at work in Washington at this time.

While JQA was Secretary of State, LCA received at weekly (later fortnightly) tea parties, invariably held on Tuesday (see entry for 28 Dec. 1823, below). Usually attended by fifty to one hundred persons, the parties were sometimes enlivened by music and dancing. See JQA’s Diary for a faithful record of the gatherings; also Bemis, JQA , 1:274.

The letter, presumably to Charles Frederic Langdon, who attended the Boston Latin School with CFA, is missing ( Boston Latin School Catalogue , p. 155).
