21. Soon after 6 O’Clock this Morning, we left French-town
in the two Stages, for New castle; the number of passengers being
sufficient to fill them both— Mr: Burr and Commodore Preble were with us. We
reached Newcastle at 10, and breakfasted at the tavern, M’Cullough’s, which is little or no better than it was
last Autumn— The Packet for Philadelphia, the Rising
Sun, was aground, at the wharf, and did not get afloat untill 2
O’Clock. The wind was fresh, and perfectly fair, so that we came to the
wharf at Philadelphia just after 5— We went immediately to Mrs:
Roberts’s 139. Walnut-Street, who accommodates us with two
chambers; 152though we arrived some days later than
we were expected— I sent the baggage in a wheel-barrow, which miss’d the
way; and was more than an hour hunting it out, before I found it.
