That is, a quarter pipe (a measure of varying size) of Fayal wine.
Elisha Hutchinson (1745–1824), merchant of Boston, was the second son of Thomas Hutchinson, chief justice and soon-to-be acting governor of Massachusetts (Peter Orlando Hutchinson, ed., Diary and Letters of His Excellency Thomas Hutchinson, Esq., 2 vols. [Boston, 1884–1886], 2:472).
This you'l receive by Express per Mr. Bracket, Covering Wm. Brown:s Four notes of hand amt. per memo. on foot to £458.6.1 Lmy. I have just heard that he is Broke or Shut up wch. gives me great Trouble & I must Intreat you'l Immedy. do yr: utmost to Secure the whole amount, or what you can towards it as I apprehend he is Indebted to others here, who will (if not allready done) soon be yr. way to Secure themselves, therefore no time is to be Lost. Pray Exert yr. Self in this affair & without Delay, as its a sum that will Ruin me if I shd. loose it, pray write me per Return of the Bearer & let me know what Brown has to say to useing me in this most Crewill manner, and if no Security can be obtain'd I shall want to know how his affairs stand, who is his Creditors &c. &c. In great hast I am Sr. Your most hble Servt.
