- This letter was originally thought to have been written to Elizabeth Smith Shaw Peabody, but in 1974 the recipient was changed to Catherine Nuth Johnson based on internal evidence, such as its discussion of to the return of John Quincy Adams and Louisa Catherine Johnson Adams ("our dear children") to America. The letter was also redated from 1800 to 1801 at this time, because they returned in 1801. ER 11/10/2015
