  • 3. ADAMS, JOHN. Second President A.L.s., 2 pp., 4to, Quincy, Nov. 1, 1811. With integral address leaf: "Dr. Benjamin Rush, Philadelphia"; franked by Adams "Free," and his signature "J. Adams" below the name "Dr. Benjamin Rush."
  • An interesting letter from one signer to another signer of the declaration of independence. Written on "thanksgiving day." About six lines of this letter have been defaced by scrawls, probably by Dr. Rush.
  • "On this our Thanksgiving Day, among innumerable other blessings, I have to express my gratitude for your favor of Nov. 11. . . . I hasten to answer your questions, that your friendly sympathies may be no longer afflicted or alarmed. Indeed I almost repent of the simple tale I told you of our sorrows . . . My son's wound is entirely healed. I walk as usual a few miles a day . . .
  • "I am not melancholy nor gloomy, but as much disposed to badinage as ever. As an instance of it, you may expect to receive letters from me till the 30th of Oct'r next, if I live so long, written in the genuine spirit of seventy-six . . ."
