- "The German project yet remains a mystery to be unravelled. The accounts that we have from New Orleans are that 900 men, or 1500, or 2000, or 3000, for all these numbers are mentioned in different accounts, have effected a landing at Galveston. But what are they to do there? They are upon the Territories of the United States and cannot remain there for any purpose friendly to them. It is also observed that the greater part of the funds with which the party sailed from Philadelphia were raised by the proceeds of sales of the Tombigbee Lands which Congress had generously granted to distressed French emigrants, for the cultivation of the vine."
