5 June 1762 to 30 Dec. 1762
Original paper slip text:5 June-30 Dec. 1762
Diary
20 p.
- Transcripts will be found in "Journal Fragments 3" (D/JA/49), p. 247-254. This is presumably "Paper Book" 8 in the sequence of JA's Diaries, but it bears no notation by CFA (except on the slip preceding "Paper Book" 5, above). This portion of the Diary strayed from the Adams collection at an unknown period and was returned with an accompanying letter from Charles P. Greenough to CFA2, 2 July 1913, in which the writer says: "I found the enclosed among my papers & it occurred to me that you might be interested. I can't for the life of me remember where & when I got it." CFA2 sent on the MS with a letter to W. C. Ford, 5 July 1913, noting that "The whole thing is very mysterious and very unpleasant" and stating he will discuss the incident further with Ford as soon as possible. [Charles P. Greenough was an autograph collector; he presented a collection of autographs and broadsides to the Boston Athenaeum.]
- Cover for No. 8 was later found in JA's Legal Papers and has been restored. Bears penciled notation "1761" and docketing (in CFA's hand): "Paper book. No. 8."
