Biographical Sketches
Warner family
William Augustus Warner (1795-1830) was born to Gen. Jonathan (1744-1803) and Hannah Mandell Warner (1747-1839) of Hardwick, Mass. He graduated from Harvard University in 1815. In 1824, he married Sarah Inches Cobb (1800-1859), the daughter of Samuel (1762-1830) and Sarah Inches Cobb (1771-1837) of Boston. The couple had four children: Jane Sarah Warner Spindler (1827-1902), Mary Brimmer Warner (1826-1852), William Augustus Warner (1829-1885), and Hermann Jackson Warner (1831-1916). Three years after William's death, Sarah married Dr. George Bates (1784-1867), son of Maj. Jonathan (1757-1829) and Sarah Orcutt Bates (1760-1826) of Cohasset, Mass. The couple had one child together, Lucy Cobb Bates Williams (1839-1902). George also had a son from his first marriage, Gen. Joshua Hall Bates (1817-1908).
Hermann Jackson Warner attended Boston Latin School, received his A.B. from Harvard College in 1850, and his LL.B in 1852. Following his graduation, Warner studied in the law offices of Sohier and Welch on Tremont St. He was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, the Boston Society of Natural History, and was involved with the Boston Committee on behalf of the Greek Relief Committee to aid the Cretan revolution.
Due to poor health, Warner moved to Europe in 1869. He married Mary Poyntell Staley (1842-1919) on 13 June 1883. She was the daughter of Andrew (1807-1866) and Rebecca Caldcleugh Staley (1816-1882) of Pennsylvania. The couple resided at Dresden, Germany and had no children. They traveled throughout Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and the Mediterranean. Warner wrote two books relating his various travels around the world, European Years: The Letters of an Idle Man (1911) and New Letters of an Idle Man (1913). Both of the Warners died in Geneva, Switzerland and are buried in Mount Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge, Mass.
Staley/Caldcleugh/Poyntell families
Andrew Staley was the son of Christopher (1767-1840) and Elizabeth Gregory Staley (1771-1827) of Youlgreave, England. He married Rebecca Caldcleugh in 1836. Rebecca was the daughter of Robert Alexander Caldcleugh (1775-1858) and Rebecca Poyntell Caldcleugh (1782-1830). Robert Caldcleugh began a stationery import business that grew to include paper hangings. He built a large fortune through real estate investments throughout Philadelphia. In 1805, he married Rebecca, daughter of William (1756-1811) and Ann Wilcocks Poyntell (1760-1829). William Poyntell was a wealthy Philadelphia merchant, stationer, and jeweler.
Collection Description
The Hermann Jackson Warner papers consist of family papers, correspondence, diaries, and miscellaneous volumes (including letterbooks, scrapbooks, commonplace-books, account books, notebooks, school workbooks, and memoranda) created by Hermann Jackson Warner, Harvard graduate, Boston lawyer, writer, expatriate, and traveler; and of other family members, including his wife Mary Poyntell Staley Warner and her extended family. The collection contains loose family papers (deeds, financial papers, correspondence, and other personal papers); loose personal correspondence of Hermann Jackson Warner; bound correspondence of Warner, transcribed and annotated by him; other volumes, including Warner's diaries (some describing travel in Europe, Japan, China, and India, among other places), writings, commonplace-books, memoranda, and Harvard papers and ephemera; papers of other family members, including women's diaries (and travel diaries), scrapbooks, commonplace-books, notes, and other memorabilia; and account books, bank books, school books, and legal notes of Warner's father (the lawyer) William A. Warner.
The collection also contains early papers of the Poyntell, Staley, and Caldcleugh families, especially items concerning land transactions in Philadelphia and other parts of Pennsylvania, as well as Cobb, Warner, and Bates family papers, chiefly correspondence, land transactions, financial memoranda, and material regarding the estate of William A. Warner. Later correspondence is almost exclusively that of Hermann Jackson Warner and Mary Poyntell Staley Warner with friends and family members. Chief correspondents and creators (among many others) are Sarah Inches Cobb Warner Bates, William A. Warner, George Bates, Frank Staley, Alida Mary Schoonmaker (later Countess Von Krockow), Joshua Hall Bates, Lucy Cobb Bates Williams, Edward Chipman Guild, John Augustus Higginson, Baron Alexander Von Pfafins, Andrew C. Wheelwright, Edward Wheelwright, Jane Sarah Warner Spindler, and Mary Brimmer Warner.
Arrangement Note
The collection is arranged largely according to Warner's own plan. The loose family papers are arranged chronologically in 15 document boxes. Warner's loose personal correspondence was arranged alphabetically within each year. Included are indexes at the beginning of each year with the names of correspondents who appear in that year. The vast bulk of his personal correspondence was transcribed by Warner and forms part of a numbered set of 166 volumes that also includes diaries and other volumes. His original numbering of these volumes has been retained. Finally, fourteen volumes (#167-180) were not numbered by Warner.
Acquisition Information
Gift of the estate of Hermann Jackson Warner, December 1974.
Other Formats
Hermann Jackson Warner's diaries 1-6 and 8-11 are available on microfilm, P-520, 2 reels.
Selections of Warner's correspondence have been published in European Years: The Letters of an Idle Man (Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1911) and New Letters of an Idle Man (1913).
Detailed Description of the Collection
The volumes in this collection were numbered by Hermann Jackson Warner, but have been re-arranged into logical series. Warner's numbers have been retained, however, so the volume numbering below is not sequential.
I. Family papers and correspondence, 1686-1908
Arranged chronologically.
This series contains loose papers related to early family activities of the Staley, Poyntell, Warner, and Cobb families. The earliest papers mainly concern land transactions in Philadelphia and other parts of Pennsylvania. Warner family items begin in 1799 with Massachusetts Turnpike Corporation shares, and Cobb items in 1801. Warner items show land transactions in Maine, legal matters that William A. Warner handled, and his estate papers (from 1830). Caldcleugh family lands appear in 1842, and Hermann Jackson Warner's Harvard papers begin in 1846. French spoliation claims of the Warner family begin in 1850, with one Cobb family claim item in 1802. George Bates' miscellaneous papers begin in the 1850s and include items pertaining to Mount Auburn Cemetery and the will of Sarah Inches Cobb Warner Bates (1857). The series also contains some correspondence among family members and letters to Hermann Jackson Warner from around 1860. Papers of Jane Sarah Warner Spindler appear in the 1880s, many items in German. After their marriage in 1883, the Warners traveled widely in Europe, Japan, China, India, and other places. Correspondence from 1888 is mainly that of Mary Poyntell Staley Warner with her family (particularly siblings Frank, Helen, and Rebecca) and friends, describing her travels, activities, and other family matters. Hermann Jackson Warner's personal papers after college begin around 1861.

III. Hermann Jackson Warner diaries, 1841-1904
Arranged chronologically.
These diaries were arranged, numbered (except #179), and bound by Hermann Jackson Warner. The early volumes are from his school years, eventually including his years at Harvard (1846-1850), Harvard Law School, and beyond. After he moved to Germany in 1869, his diaries describe his activities overseas and on numerous excursions to other parts of Europe and eventually to Asian countries, India, Egypt, etc. The diaries often contained loose items such as newspaper clippings; these have been removed from the volumes and are stored in separate folders with the volumes. This series also includes one diary (vol. 179) that was not numbered by Warner, describing travel in Germany and elsewhere, 1859-1860. Warner first visited Germany in 1859-1860 and moved there in 1869 for health reasons, residing in Dresden for the rest of his life, while also traveling extensively throughout Europe and other parts of the world.
A few of the volumes were disbound before this collection description was created.

V. Correspondence volumes, 1835-1908
Hermann Jackson Warner was a committed letter writer, and he painstakingly transcribed and annotated most of his correspondence in volumes which were arranged, numbered, and bound in Germany. A number of volumes contain family and miscellaneous correspondence, and they are followed by Warner's long (multi-volume) collections of letters with Mary Poyntell Staley Warner, Lida M. Schoonmaker (later Countess von Krockow), Joshua Hall Bates, Lucy Cobb Bates Williams, Edward C. Guild, John Augustus Higginson, Baron Alexander von Pfafins, Andrew C. Wheelwright, Edward Wheelwright, and Jane Sarah Warner Spindler. Volume 66 consists of loose original correspondence of Bates and Warner family members. Most of these volumes had loose items tucked into the pages; these items are now foldered separately.
