    This crimson cloak was worn by Peter Oliver (1713-1791), chief justice of the Superior Court of Judicature in Massachusetts and a member of both the House of Representatives and the Governor’s Council. Befitting an eminent, fashion-conscious Tory, Oliver likely imported this example from England, perhaps through the Long Wharf trading house held by his brother Andrew Oliver, Sr.
